Town Council

Chairman's report to the Annual Parish Meeting of the Saxmundham Town Council May 2013.

It has been a busy year for the Town Council and also for the Town as many things have been going on. The main highlights of the year are:

•  The opening of the Tesco Store in May.
•  HM the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
•  The Olympic Torch.
•  The opening of the Free School in September.
•  The Fromus Centre and the opening of the Smile Café in October.
•  The Town Survey in January/February.

In May, the Tesco Store in Church Street, opened its doors for the first time. The Town Council had misgivings at the planning stage that problems could be caused by traffic at the lights and so it turned out. The Highways Department at Suffolk County Council were asked to look at the problems and the TC is still awaiting their proposed solutions. There were also complaints from adjacent residents about deliveries outside the permitted hours as per the planning permission. This was due to a misunderstanding by the management and the matter has been successfully concluded.

The Town did us proud with the turnout for the various activities organised over HM the Queen's Diamond Jubilee week-end, despite the weather. Both Waitrose and Tesco were very generous in their support for the children's street party on the Sunday.

The turnout for the Olympic Torch's passage through Saxmundham was absolutely fantastic, even though it started to rain as soon as the Torch appeared, and Saxmundham was pleased to host pupils from several of the Local schools for the occasion.

For the first time, the Remembrance Sunday Parade was honoured by the presence of Paul Cooke DL.

The independent Town Plan working party finally issued the questionnaire for the Town Survey in January and it is expected that the results of the Survey will be available later this year. I am told that the response to the survey has been good.

In December, the first phase of the Consultation on the proposed building of Sizewell C' Nuclear power station started with an exhibition in the Market Hall when the various options were displayed. Many people attended and the results have yet to be announced. The Town Council has put in a comprehensive report.

In December, I was very sorry to receive the resignation from the Town Council of Mrs Rose Daminal-White. Rose has worked tirelessly in her position as Chairman of the Planning Committee, and I should like to thank her for all that she has done. In February, the Town Council co-opted her replacement and I should like to welcome Roger Plant to the Council.

The Town Clerk, Mrs Maddie Gallop, started to have a problem with her back in February and has now been away sick for the past two months. It has made it difficult to manage the Town Council without her presence as she has worked so diligently and we all wish her a speedy recovery.

Finally, I should like to my fellow councillors and the Town Clerk for their support and work during the last year.

Sir Peter Batho, Bt.

Chairman.
