Saxmundham is a member of the Suffolk Association of Local Councils which provides support for Town and Parish Councils throughout the County.

Suffolk Coastal District Council is resposible for environmental matters in the area while Suffolk County Council deals with highways, education and social services.

Our local MP is Rt Hon John Gummer.

An election to select two Suffolk Coastal District Councillors for the Saxmundham ward (Saxmundham, Kelsale and Theberton) was held on Thursday 3rd May 2007.

The result was:

Marian Andrews (Liberal Democrat Party) 692 votes

Peter Batho (Conservative Party)             805 votes

Keith Dickerson (Liberal Democrat Party)  523 votes

Richard Smith (Conservative Party)          590 votes

didn't vote                                approx. 2200

The term of office for the current district councillors ends in May 2011.

An election of Suffolk County Councillors took place on Thursday 5th May 2005 from 7am to 10pm.

The Division boundaries had changed since the previous election four years earlier.

The result for the Blything Division (which now comprises the parishes of Blythburgh, Bramfield, Darsham, Dunwich, Kelsale, Middleton, Saxmundham, Theberton, Thorington, Walberswick, Wenhaston, Westleton & Yoxford) was:

David Jermy (Labour Party)                   892 votes

Rae Leighton (Conservative Party)        1807 votes

Barry Slater (Liberal Democrat Party)   1539 votes

Don Tricker (Independent)                    508 votes

didn't vote                              approx. 3070

The term of office for the current county councillors ends in May 2009.
