Saxmundham is a member of SALC Suffolk Association of Local Councils which provides support for Town and Parish Councils throughout the County.

Suffolk Coastal District Council is resposible for environmental matters in the area while Suffolk County Council deals with highways, education and social services.

Effective from the election on 7th May 2015, the number of Suffolk Coastal District Councillors will be reduced from 55 to 42, with new ward boundaries. There will be a two-member Saxmundham ward comprising the four parishes of Saxmundham, Kelsale-cum-Carlton, Benhall and Sternfield.
