Free Strength and Balance Classes available in Saxmundham
Managed by East Suffolk Council and delivered by community and leisure partners, local residents have the opportunity to take part in free, 12-week strength and balance programmes. Classes aim to improve participants’ balance, co-ordination, flexibility and confidence and are designed for individuals aged 65 or over who have recently had a fall or feel unsteady on their feet.
Classes take place weekly, lasting 60 minutes, and are led by a qualified instructor in a safe space. The exercises are designed to help people feel more confident on their feet, to get in and out of a chair and provide an opportunity to socialise with other members of the community with a shared goal to increase activity.
Current class locations include:
- Fromus Centre, Street Farm Road, Saxmundham, IP17 1AL – Mondays, 11.45am (run by ActivLives)
- Leiston Leisure Centre, Red House Lane, Leiston, IP16 4LS – Mondays, 10am (run by Places Leisure)
- Waterloo Centre, Waterloo Avenue, Leiston, IP16 4HE – Wednesdays 11.15am (run by ActivLives)
There are also programmes delivered across Woodbridge and Felixstowe, with plans to expand further in 2025.
Still unsure on what to expect? Please read one of our participant testimonials below:
‘I am on my 8th session of my strength and balance programme at Leiston and I have met some lovely people here. It has given me the confidence to go and meet more new people now. I was very nervous about going out of my house especially in the winter and as I live on my own, I didn’t get to meet new people very often. I am definitely going to complete the 12 weeks now and I am really happy I started the classes.’
